ICE Agents Now In Great Danger—California Dems Responsible

Two California state senators ignited a new firestorm Monday by introducing a bill that would make it illegal for law enforcement officers—including federal ICE agents—to wear face coverings while on duty. Democrats Scott Wiener of San Francisco and Jesse Arreguín of Berkeley co-authored the legislation, citing transparency concerns. But critics say the bill risks exposing officers to retaliation during a time of intensifying threats.

“We’re really at risk of having, effectively, secret police in this country,” Wiener claimed, parroting the left’s growing narrative that ICE agents operating under President Trump are part of some shadowy crackdown. Arreguín echoed the sentiment, saying the bill would help prevent impersonation and build public trust.

But there’s just one problem: there’s no wave of fake ICE agents terrorizing neighborhoods. The real issue—according to agents on the ground—is a surge in violence aimed at actual law enforcement.

The proposed legislation comes after days of chaos across U.S. cities, including riots that erupted in Los Angeles following a June 6 ICE operation. Protesters, outraged over stepped-up immigration enforcement, assaulted officers, torched property, and attacked ICE vehicles. The fury was so intense that 700 U.S. Marines had to be deployed to support federalized National Guard troops.

With the “No Kings” protests escalating into full-blown riots, agents began wearing masks to shield their identities—not from embarrassment, but from threats of doxxing and violent retribution.

Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons warned of rising danger just days before the protests. “Our officers are increasingly targeted,” he said. “We have to take steps to protect their families.”

The Department of Homeland Security backed up those concerns with hard numbers. In a post on X, DHS revealed a staggering 400 percent increase in assaults against ICE personnel. They also warned of coordinated online efforts to identify and harass individual agents.

For many on the right, this new bill confirms what they’ve long suspected: that California Democrats aren’t just ignoring border enforcement—they’re actively undermining it.

“This bill has nothing to do with public safety,” one former DHS official told Townhall. “It’s about making ICE agents vulnerable so the left’s activist base can target them.”

While Wiener and Arreguín couch their legislation in language about “accountability,” the timing is hard to ignore. President Trump has made immigration enforcement central to his second-term agenda, and ICE operations have ramped up significantly. In recent weeks, Trump has directed the agency to focus on deportations in sanctuary cities like Los Angeles, New York, and Chicago—Democratic strongholds where tensions are already boiling over.

Critics of the California proposal say it would effectively strip federal officers of a basic security measure at a time when they are under siege.

The legislation has yet to be formally debated, but Republicans and law enforcement groups are already sounding the alarm. If passed, the law would bar ICE agents from wearing protective face coverings even while conducting dangerous operations in violent environments.

And while Democrats continue to defend the bill as a move toward law enforcement “reform,” opponents say it’s just another chapter in the party’s long war on immigration enforcement—one that could come with deadly consequences.

With assaults rising and political rhetoric inflamed, ICE agents now face threats not only from the streets—but from Sacramento too.
