“It must be nice…it must be nice…” Hamilton’s Broadway show has had epic success on stage, and much of it is because of the diversity. After all, it’s not every day that you get to see the founding fathers rapping on stage.
Oh, and there’s the fact that Thomas Jefferson and many others are portrayed by Black and Hispanic men.
The amount of diversity is considerable. So, it’s quite the shock when the Broadway play is actually accused of discrimination. How is this possible? They’ve covered all of their bases.
Well, they didn’t. At least, not in the world we live in where people don’t even know what gender they are anymore.
A non-binary actor requested a gender-neutral dressing room. Non-binaries, for anyone not in the know, is someone who doesn’t identify as either a male or a female.
Non-binaries are difficult to work with because they want to ignore science. This can’t possibly be the first time they’ve faced some level of discrimination. What doctor do they go to? What bathroom do they go into?
It doesn’t matter whether you believe you are of one gender or another. Your biological sex dictates quite a bit. Even transgender individuals know what bathroom or dressing room to ask for because they have decided on a particular gender.
A non-binary is caught in the middle. They don’t want to identify as one or the other because they want to remain fluid. Yet, that’s not the way that the world works.
And, it seems that the Hamilton production was under the same general consensus. They may be diverse and they may be liberal, but they have to draw the line somewhere.
Suni Reid is the actor who is screaming discrimination. During the LA run of the show, he made a request for a gender-neutral dressing room. Beyond that, he said that he was misgendered by other cast members — and even threatened physically.
Reid’s contract was not renewed, and he is claiming that it is retaliation due to his request.
Suni Reid has gone on to file a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. As someone who is transgender and non-binary, the actor wants they/them pronouns to be used. The actor claims to have made a “legally protected request” by asking for a gender-neutral dressing room in Hollywood at the Pantages Theater.
The dressing room was granted to the actor. However, the production chose not to renew the contract for Suni Reid.
Contracts don’t get renewed all the time. Whether it was over the request or not could simply not be known. Hamilton producers have repeatedly denied the allegations. One statement that they did make was that “Suni Reid was a valued cast member for more than three years.” They went on to say that they deny the allegations and that they have not discriminated against or retaliated against Suni in any way.
Cast members have repeatedly shown that they are liberal. Hamilton actor Brandon Victor Dixon sounded off on Pence during the 2016 elections to say “We, sir — we — are the diverse America who are alarmed and anxious that your new administration will not protect us, our planet, our children, our parents, or defend us and uphold our inalienable rights.”
Ahh, but it seems that there’s always another level of diversity that must also share the limelight. Will it ever end? After all, even the wokest show on Broadway isn’t woke enough.
