MSM Already Pounding Justice Barrett’s Reputation Under Guise of Real Reporting

The same Supreme Court appointment that caused joy for conservatives has brought a deluge of not just hurt feelings, but confusion on the part of many in the mainstream media.

While it’s no secret that most cable news networks and big-name reporters firmly support Joe Biden and the Democratic National convention, the immediate weaponization of their substantial platforms has been surprising, even to the right.

Case in point, MSNBC reported that “Amy Coney Barrett’s first decision” as a Supreme Court Justice “was a wrong one.” The network’s Steve Benen began his diatribe against Barrett, saying that “ the conservative jurist delivered brief remarks stressing the importance of independence” just hours after a “largely partisan” vote to confirm her.

“It is the job of a senator to pursue her policy preferences. In fact, it would be a dereliction of duty for her to put policy goals aside. By contrast, it is the job of a judge to resist her policy preferences. It would be a dereliction of duty for her to give into them,” she said. “A judge declares independence not only from Congress and the president but also from the private beliefs that might otherwise move her.”

Even Benen couldn’t actually find fault in Barrett’s remarks, however: “Those were, to be sure, the kind of comments one expects from a judge,” the MSNBC contributor said. “The problem, however, wasn’t with the rhetoric, but rather with the setting in which the remarks were delivered.”

Seeing the problem yet? Yeah, this is kind of an “it’s not what you said, it’s how you said it” complaint. Democrats have, as of yet, been unable to find anything about Barrett to pick apart. Her family, her reputation, and her record as a judge are all virtually unassailable, therefore, they’re attacking her by proxy.

The mainstream media has decided that her affiliation with President Donald Trump, the one that appointed her to the position, and (quick reminder) the leader of the free world, is atrocious and an “in” to go after her.

MSNBC’s reporter didn’t even attempt to try to hide his disdain for Trump or his love for the former president.

“When President Barack Obama’s Supreme Court nominees were confirmed, Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan were sworn in at the high court by Chief Justice John Roberts,” Benen said. “The events were understated. The Democratic president, eager to respect the importance of the judiciary, was not on hand.

“In contrast, when Donald Trump’s first two nominees were confirmed, Justices Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh were sworn in inches away from the Republican president who seemed eager to appear in every photograph.

“Last night, the former reality-show personality turned the dial to 11, hosting a prime-time spectacle at the White House. It was, for all intents and purposes, a campaign celebration, held for the cameras, just eight days before Election Day.”

Essentially, what Benen is saying, is that Republicans should have been contrite about Barrett’s confirmation, and the celebration was in bad taste. The feeling that one gets reading Benen’s synopsis of the events is that of a child who is irate that other children are having fun at a birthday party where he isn’t the center of attention.

“Barrett’s first decision as a confirmed Supreme Court justice was to agree to participate in this political spectacle,” Benen said. “She knew about the electoral context; she knew this prime-time program would give the appearance of a political victory party, and she chose to do this anyway,” the supposed journalist said, driving home his point, that Barrett should have shown some contrition over her lifelong achievement to one of the most prestigious positions in the world.

Could this vote have gone another way? Absolutely. Did it make a lot of people upset? Again, the answer is a resounding yes. Are those who stood against Barrett grasping at straws to find a flaw with her?

Once again, the answer seems to be in the affirmative. I would venture to say that if anyone is reactionary and in bad taste, it’s those who don’t want to see the successful career mother of an intentionally diverse family succeed in life. Wow guys, just wow.
