The calls for Mayor Wheeler to resign have been raining down in Portland for some time now. People are getting tired of the constant violence and they want to see him putting a stop to it. The rioters are not cutting him any slack, either. This is a man who is under assault from all directions. Now, the rioters have decided that they have finally had enough.
They headed to the ritzy district of the city where the mayor lives and let him know how much his “support” meant to them. Mind you, this is the same mayor who wanted to stand in solidarity with the protesters. They did not fall for this old political trick. When they arrived at his residence, they wasted no time starting fires and smashing windows.
It was his birthday and this is the party that the protesters decided to throw for him. The idea that the protesters were happy to pal around with the mayor was always a misnomer. This is the same trick that a number of mayors have tried. Wheeler figured that his tear gas photo op would earn him all of the street cred that he could possibly need.
Meanwhile, the more astute liberals dig into these mayors’ spending habits of the past. They see that they are not putting their money where their mouths are. That’s why the lip service that is being paid to the movement is not being tolerated. These folks may not have the right idea about how to solve their current problems but they are not going to be pandered to.
If they could find a better way to go about these pursuits, they would have a better chance. For example, when they lit this condo building on fire, guess what? A first-floor office that was owned and operated by minorities was destroyed. This is the collateral damage that is done when rioters are given the green light to continue destroying their cities.
As for Wheeler, he seems to think that the violence will take care of itself eventually but nothing could be further from the truth. These are not children throwing a temper tantrum. They are not going to burn themselves, if you are willing to pardon the expression. The riots have been taking place for about three months now and unemployment remains at an all time high.
In other words, no one is truly motivated to head home anytime soon. Picnic tables were lit on fire outside of the condo as well. Anyone who can explain what this will do to put a stop to the racial injustices that are currently taking place in this country is welcome to do so. The only solace that we take in these attacks is the solace that comes from knowing that Wheeler is finally getting his just desserts.
The police were ordered to come in and put a stop to the birthday party because the mayor’s home had to be protected. The scene got ugly quickly. A rioter decided to flip one of the officers’ helmets off their head and pummeled into the ground. The officers had no choice but to bull rush them and start taking them down to the ground.
This is night #95 of the Portland protests. Wheeler’s insistence that they will tire themselves out is falling on deaf ears. We are willing to bet that his tune on the matter will change, now that his home has been destroyed. He may have thought that he could stand with the protesters to keep them away from his property but it was all for naught.
Portland probably should have accepted the help that the president was ready to provide. It was more important to Mayor Wheeler to pal around with the leftists. His photo op on the front lines did not save him once the rioters were ready to pay him a visit. Let’s hope that the other mayors and governors learn something from this.
